A brief history

The designer of the cemetery, Carlo Maciachini, was born in 1818 and died in 1899. The construction began in 1863, in a wide (250.000 mq) and at that time country area near the railway, north-west of the city; the city council wanted to close many little cemeteries inside the city, and after a couple of years the area was ready for inumation. The Temple of Fame ("Famedio") took some more time to be finished, and we can date the end of the works in 1875. Of course the space was slowly but inesorably occupied and now that this quite place is encircled by buildings and offices, only important or rich people are buried here.
